800-Volt Tech Set to Revolutionize EV Charging
The electric vehicle (EV) industry is witnessing a shift towards higher voltage systems, with 800-volt technology emerging as the next big trend. This move promises faster charging speeds and improved efficiency, as seen in the plans of major automakers like Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and BMW.
Currently, most mid-range EVs operate on 400-volt systems, offering charging power up to 250 kW and charging times around 30 minutes for 10-80 percent. However, 800-volt systems are set to revolutionize charging, with power outputs ranging from 240 to 350 kW and charging times reduced to 15-18 minutes for the same range.
Volvo is set to adopt 800-volt technology for its EX90 model from 2026, enabling significantly faster charging. Mercedes-Benz is expanding its 800-volt charging infrastructure, hinting at the adoption of this technology in its future models. Porsche, already a leader in 800-volt technology, is expected to continue advancing this in its EVs. BMW, too, is involved in research projects aiming to develop ultra-fast charging compatible with 800-volt battery systems.
Manufacturers like Valeo are developing flexible 800-volt architectures and components, supporting multiple OEMs in transitioning to this technology. As production volumes increase, component prices are expected to fall, making 800-volt systems the future standard in EVs.
The shift towards 800-volt systems in EVs promises significant improvements in charging speeds and efficiency. With major automakers and component suppliers investing in this technology, it is likely to become the new standard in the coming years, driving the widespread adoption of faster-charging, more efficient electric vehicles.
