27 May, 2025: VietJet's Ambitious Stride into the Long-Haul Market

In a strategic move to challenge prominent low-cost long-haul competitors, VietJet Air has confirmed an order for 20 additional Airbus A330-900 aircraft. This decision not only signifies a significant fleet expansion but also highlights VietJet's ambition to expand its services to Australia and Europe[1][2][3].

The A330-900, acclaimed for its fuel efficiency and long-range capabilities, will serve as a potent weapon in VietJet's arsenal, propelling its presence across the Asia-Pacific region[2]. According to VietJet's Chairwoman, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, the state-of-the-art Airbus aircraft will support the carrier's ongoing growth and its dedication to sustainable travel[2].

Currently, VietJet's A330s serve destinations including Australia, India, and Kazakhstan, offering both luxury Business Class options and cost-effective travel choices[2]. With the addition of 20 A330neos—bringing VietJet's total pledged A330neo aircraft to 40—the airline positions itself as a formidable contender in the long-haul sector, capable of delivering high-volume service on key international routes with widebody comfort[2].

While Scoot and AirAsia X have long dominated the low-cost long-haul market in the region, VietJet's momentum is rapidly escalating[5]. With an all-Airbus fleet of 115 aircraft and a growing order book including 96 A320neo Family aircraft, the Vietnamese carrier is leveraging scale, efficiency, and regional demand to displace the status quo[5].

Airbus International President, Wouter van Wersch, commented on the strategic decision, expressing pride in VietJet's choice of the A330neo as its widebody aircraft of preference[2]. Furthermore, the A330neo's capabilities cater to shifting market demands, particularly in Australia and beyond. As eco-conscious travellers prioritize sustainable options, the A330neo, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and certified to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), fits the bill by delivering both performance and green credentials[3].

Armed with the A330-900's extended range of up to 13,300 km, VietJet can explore an array of non-stop route possibilities, including Europe and deeper access across Australia. For competitors, the timing could not be more critical, as international travel resurges, capacity, and cost-efficiency become key considerations[2].

In the face of growing competition, Scoot, AirAsia X, and even legacy carriers offering budget-friendly fares on long-haul routes are getting a clear message: VietJet is evolving beyond a regional player, on its way to becoming a global one[2].
