German youth hostels have embraced change to become more contemporary and appealing to a diverse array of guests beyond the young brigade. Knut Stolle, a member of the German Youth Hostel Association (DJH) board, articulates this clearly, "All guests are welcome in all youth hostels."

This new demographic ranges from school groups, families, and friendship circles to individual adventurers. One of the best examples of this transformation is the revamped Wetzlar youth hostel, which has been refurbished to entice not only young souls but also families and businesses.

According to Paul Sarges, the hostel's manager, approximately 40% of the beds have been converted into single or double beds, with the remainder being bunk beds. The shift seeks to draw in families and corporations as guests.

A Barrier-free Sojourn for All

Inclusive accommodation is another prominent feature of Hessian youth hostels. While not all historic buildings are wheelchair-accessible, facilities like Wetzlar and Burg Hessenstein strive for inclusivity. "With the right determination, it can be accomplished," asserts Knut Stolle. Both these hostels offer quiet, barrier-free rooms catering to all guest categories.

Moreover, cooperations with healthcare providers provide care beds for individuals living with disabilities such as visual and auditory impairments or cognitive disabilities. Barrier-reduced offerings are generally available in every house, further enhancing the accessibility quotient of the hostels.

Just a Few Cents for Your Stay

An special membership with the DJH and a pass are the only requirements to spend a night in a hostel. The membership fee advocates for the values the facilities stand for, as stated on the association's website – environmental education, sustainability, tolerance, and open-mindedness.
