A Slippery Slope: Hitchhiking Down Costa Rica's Volcanic Slopes
Adventures on the Open Road: Cheese-Fueled Hitchhiking Journeys through Costa Rica
With Irazu's peak awaiting us and San Jose on the horizon, the journey down seemed anything but straightforward. Opting to venture down the mountain through the unconventional (and illegal) means of hitchhiking, we prepared ourselves for an adventure.
First, the bus ride from Cartago took us ascending afar, with a rugged local facilitating the remainder of our ascent in his jeep. Already, Irazu was proving to be unlike any other volcano I'd devoured on my winding expedition.
Standing atop Costa Rica's highest peak, we faced the mountainous landscape, searching for our release. Although it conceals itself beneath a cloak of clouds, the allure of Irazu reveals its cerulean crater once in a while, beckoning us forward.
The Hazardous Hitchhiker
Swallowing our apprehensions, we embarked on the daring quest of hitchhiking, eager to tread on the unbeaten path. Hitchhiking has earned a reputation it needn't bear—often misconstrued as perilous by faint-hearted armchair adventurers. Engage in conversation with genuine aficionados, and you'll encounter a completely different story.
Securing a Seat
brace yourself for disappointment as the initial two vehicles greeted our pitiful thumbs with disdain. Playing the part of a desperate actor, they pretended exhausted-excuses, attempting to shield their cowardice. Among them, a troop of fellow gringos! Their designated team leader, greedily weaving his tale of deception, insisted the bus had no room, perhaps not realizing his act was the epitome of irony.
Nonetheless, we refused to back down. The third proved to be our lucky charm as we infiltrated the back of a brand-new pickup. The family who welcomed us into their vehicle gauged us keenly, understanding without a doubt that there'd be no bloodshed en route.
Frostbites and Fiesta
The spine-chilling ride initially rattled our nervous systems as the truck navigated the uneven dirt road. As we ascended higher, the shivering numbness that enveloped us was not due to the rickety ride but rather the freezing temperatures induced by the lofty elevation.
Despite the bone-chilling cold, the descent provided breathtaking panoramas of the cloud-kissed mountains, quaint hamlets, and verdant farmlands. In one of those farms, villagers had placed discreet produce stands offering enticing Costa Rican delicacies, such as the local Queso Palmito. Seizing the moment to satisfy my rumbling stomach, I allowed myself to indulge in this squishy cheese, the perfect ally for our hitchhiking journey.
With genuine gratitude and heartfelt farewells, we bid adieu to our newfound companions and hailed a city bus, eager to continue our Costa Rican escapade. ★
