AfricaBP's goals remain focused on shielding Africa's diverse wildlife through the practice of genomic sequencing, amidst heightened debate.

The African BioGenome Project (AfricaBP) is making strides in expanding genomics capabilities across Africa, aiming to safeguard biodiversity, advance food security, and foster a thriving bioeconomy.

One of the key challenges AfricaBP is addressing is cost and foreign dependency. By building local genomics infrastructure, the project enables sequencing and research within Africa, rather than relying on external facilities. The Open Institute, a platform of AfricaBP, promotes curriculum development and technological advancement within African institutions, reducing reliance on foreign expertise and costly outsourcing.

Increasing public engagement and reducing skepticism is another priority for AfricaBP. The project runs hands-on workshops and training, reaching thousands of participants and demystifying genomics. These efforts foster trust among scientists, policymakers, and the public, and address concerns where GMO crops have faced opposition. Education also targets regulatory frameworks and the responsible use of genomics, improving acceptance across the continent.

AfricaBP's ambitious goal is to sequence approximately 105,000 endemic species, many of which have economic, scientific, and cultural significance for African communities. This will inform conservation strategies and sustainable use of biological resources, supporting the broader African bioeconomy—expected to grow by integrating genomics and biotechnology.

The project, which recently published a study titled "Unlocking the African Bioeconomy and Strengthening Biodiversity Conservation through Genomics and Bioinformatics," is led by over 100 African scientists and over 20 organizations from across the continent. The study emphasizes that genomics offers transformative economic opportunities for Africa, with the sequencing of 105,000 species projected to generate significant impacts across the continent.

However, Africa has been slow to embrace genomics, despite issues like food insecurity and disappearing biodiversity. Few countries have put genomics technology into the public sphere due to potential controversy. AfricaBP aims to change this by reducing foreign dependency, creating skilled jobs, lowering costs, and accelerating innovations.

The estimated cost for sequencing and related activities is $850 million, with an additional $20 million for data storage and processing. Despite the significant investment, AfricaBP's Chair, Prof. Anne Muigai, views the project as a milestone in AfricaBP's contribution to Africa's bioeconomy through genomics and bioinformatics.

As the global genomics market is projected to grow from $42.6 billion in 2024 to $66.8 billion by 2029, Africa stands to gain competitively by advancing its genomics landscape through capacity building and the establishment of local sequencing hubs.
