Almaty Aims to Become Central Asia's 'Green Innovation Hub' by 2037
Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city, is embarking on an ambitious journey to become Central Asia's 'Green Innovation Hub' by 2037. The city's action plan, published in 2022, aims to transform Almaty into a sustainable, climate-friendly metropolis with improved air quality and water management.
Almaty's transformation will occur in phases. By 2027, 30 short-term measures will be completed. These include expanding climate-friendly public transport and pedestrian/cycling paths to reduce air pollution. The city is also addressing water scarcity through water-absorbing green spaces, storage, and retention basins.
Long-term measures, to be implemented between 2028 and 2037, will further develop Almaty into a green and smart city, connecting remote suburbs and enhancing future-readiness.
A key aspect of this plan is the conversion of Almaty's energy supply to gas. The city's largest coal power plant, Almaty-CHP-2, is set to be converted, with three turbines operational by 2026. Loan agreements have already been signed for the Almaty-TEZ-2 heating plant's conversion.
Almaty's 'Green Innovation Hub' plan is a significant step towards sustainability and climate resilience. By 2037, the city aims to improve air quality, adapt to climate change, and contribute to social and economic well-being. The 15-minute city concept, to be tested by 2024, will ensure all residents can meet basic needs within a short distance, further enhancing the city's liveability.
