Alone Supports Record Number of Older People in 2024
Alone, Ireland's leading charity supporting older people, has reported a significant increase in its services in 2024. The organisation supported almost 44,000 older people, the highest number in its history, with a notable rise in new clients and service visits.
Alone's support is heavily skewed towards women, with 1.5 women supported for every man. The charity made 109,040 visitation support and befriending visits in 2024, a 20% increase from the previous year. This surge in visits comes alongside a 13% rise in telephone support, with 213,506 calls made in 2024.
The charity's volunteers played a crucial role, contributing 264,430 hours in 2024, valued at up to €7.81 million. This dedication has helped Alone provide ongoing support to 10,183 older people and assist 15,516 new clients in 2024, a 28% increase from 2023. Key areas of support include mobility problems, housing issues, and financial concerns.
These figures highlight the growing need for services supporting older people in Ireland. With global population ageing, as projected by the United Nations, Ireland must prepare for the challenges of an ageing population. Alone's commitment to increasing its support and visits underscores the importance of addressing these challenges proactively.
