An Unconventional Approach to The Fly is Emerging from a Fascinating Filmmaker

A not-so-subtle hint at the twisted outcomes of meddling with nature's order is on the horizon, as Nikyatu Jusu, renowned for her 2022 chilling folk-horror tale Nanny, is currently working on a revamp of the classic The Fly. As per Deadline, responsible for the scoop, Jusu's movie will be set in the universe of David Cronenberg's original film and won't follow a straightforward remake route. Jusu will serve as the director and scriptwriter for the project.

According to Deadline, the storyline remains under wraps, yet if it draws inspiration from David Cronenberg's 1986 masterpiece, which bagged an Oscar for its remarkable make-up effects, one can assume that plenty of disturbing body transformations await viewers.

Cronenberg's film delved into themes associated with ruthless scientific advancements and corporate entities financing edgy research ventures. It also showcased excellent chemistry between then-spouses Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis. (You know what to say: "Cheeseburger!") Cronenberg's The Fly was itself influenced by two 1950s releases - George Langelaan's short story and the 1958 film starring Vincent Price.

Jusu has taken on various horror projects, including updating her 2019 short film Suicide by Sunlight, featuring the tale of Black vampires, in 2022, and announced her intention to direct a Night of the Living Dead sequel in 2022 as well. However, neither of these two projects has revealed recent developments.

On the other hand, Brad Anderson-directed Twilight of the Dead, the closing installment in George A. Romero's iconic zombie series, gained momentum last week by announcing Milla Jovovich and Betty Gabriel as its leading ladies.

Deadline suggested that the reemergence of Jusu's The Fly could be due to the resurgence of interest in body horror – instigated by Demi Moore's contemporary hit The Substance. Do you think it's exciting to see The Fly coming back into focus again?
