Archbishop Chaput Invites All to Prayer Service for Immigrants and Refugees
Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia invites all to a prayer service in support of immigrants and refugees. The event will take place at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul at 4:00 p.m. on March 19. The archbishop acknowledges the complexity of immigration policy and the need for reform that balances national security with welcoming newcomers.
The Catholic Church in Philadelphia, through the Diocese of Philadelphia, actively supports immigrants and refugees. It offers social services, legal aid, and pastoral care through various offices and organizations. Catholic Social Services provides low-cost legal assistance for visas, residency documents, work authorization, and citizenship. Archbishop Chaput reminded his flock of past discrimination against Catholics and the importance of welcoming immigrants and refugees as God's children. However, some immigrants may avoid the prayer service due to fears of deportation following recent ICE actions.
The prayer service, supported by the U.S. bishops' conference through the Parishes Organized to Welcome Refugees initiative, aims to show solidarity with immigrants and refugees. Archbishop Chaput encourages all citizens and legal residents to attend and stand in unity with these communities.
