Artificial Intelligence's Ability in Identifying Emotions through Human Speech
In a groundbreaking development, scientists have created a new artificial intelligence (AI) system that can identify emotions in human speech. This AI system, trained by researchers at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Russia, surpasses traditional algorithms by making the interaction between a person and computer more interactive.
For a long time, computers have been successful in converting speech into text. However, the emotional component, crucial for conveying meaning in human speech, has been largely neglected. This new AI system aims to bridge that gap.
The research used a deep learning approach, where the AI system conducts future actions based on data points that accumulate over time. The AI system can interpret more complex inputs due to inferences from its own past experiences and previously stored data.
To work with sound, the researchers transformed it into images - spectrograms - a method commonly used for image recognition. In 70% of cases, the computer identified the emotion correctly, according to the researchers.
Systems in a neural network, the processors used by this AI system, can learn from their own experiences. The neural network used in this research was trained to recognise eight different emotions: neutral, calm, happy, sad, angry, scared, disgusted, and surprised.
The AI system's ability to identify emotions in speech could have significant implications for various fields. In customer service, it could help agents better understand and respond to customers' emotions. In mental health, it could assist in detecting signs of distress or mental health issues.
