Flying Economy Class on Vietnam Airlines' Airbus A321: A Decent Short-Haul Experience

Arrr, mateys! Here's the lowdown on my recent short-haul adventure aboard Vietnam Airlines' Airbus A321 from Singapore to Ho Chi Minh City.

Our chariot, VN-A397, is a 12-year-old A321-200 that aimlessly sails through Vietnam Airlines' fleet of 62 A321s. It cruises with a mix of A321CEOs and A321NEOs, primarily used on domestic routes. With 16 Business Class seats in a 2-2 layout and 168 Economy seats in a 3-3 configuration, this Airbus feels more like a pirate galleon than a modern aircraft.

The routes between Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City are packed with travelers seeking a taste of Asian culture. Four carriers ally together to offer 68 weekly flights, with Vietnam Airlines standing firm at the helm of the narrow-body fleet. Although once this path was sailed by the airline's flagship Boeing 787 Dreamliners, today's full flight on the A321 remains a steady beacon of service.

The Economy seating on VN-A397 boasts a simple yet practical experience, much like an inn in a quaint coastal village – straightforward, comfortable, yet well-suited for the purse of any sailor. Each of the 168 economy seats sports a standard economy-class design with cushioned fabric seats, an 81 cm seat pitch, an 18-inch seat width, and a backrest recline of 11.5 cm. Aye, ye be luckier with a bulkhead seat like I had, providing ample legroom to stretch those sea legs.

Vietnam Airlines' crew greeted us with waves as friendly as a shoreline, with courteous and smiling faces throughout the voyage. From the moment we boarded, they did not disappoint. Each member of the motley crew interacted with passengers as if every day were festive, treating each sailor like a honored guest.

They served a late-lunch meal during our two-hour journey, offering a choice of chicken with rice in sauce, accompanied by veggies and a warm roll with butter. Asian carriers, and Vietnam Airlines in particular, excel at Oriental-inspired catering – this meal was no exception. The chicken was tender and flavorful, the sauce adding an extra zest to the dish. Pair that with warm, steamed rice, and you've got a hearty meal that felt like a warm embrace from the sea.

Vietnam Airlines does not offer personal IFE screens in the Economy or Business Class on their A321s. However, I discovered a workaround by connecting to the onboard LotuStar WiFi, which granted access to the same IFE system found on the seat-back screens of Vietnam Airlines' wide-body aircraft – a delightful surprise! Please note that the WiFi does not support internet browsing.

The flight attendants provided warm hand towels before takeoff, and while blankets were not provided, pillows remain stowed on longer flights. The seat pocket contained a variety of items, including an airsickness bag, a Lotushop catalog, a magazine, and a "Heritage Guide" to Ho Chi Minh City – a useful resource for exploring the city.

In conclusion, flying Economy Class on Vietnam Airlines' Airbus A321 comes with a decent short-haul experience that delivers value for money. The service, entertainment, and hospitality on this Airbus are reliably comfortable, making it an attractive choice for regional travelers. Happy adventures, mateys!
