Revamped Way to Savor the Silversea Experience

In April, I embarked on my first Silversea adventure, cruising the Aegean for six mind-blowing days. The Silver Spirit, our vessel, set sail from Athens, touching Syros, Crete, Rhodes, Ephesus, and Mykonos before returning to Athens. The excursions were a treat, but I found myself yearning for more ocean days, simply relishing the ship and its phenomenal service.

The cruise industry often talks about big and new, but the Silver Spirit proves that small and refined is pure magic. Launched in 2009, with a 2018 makeover, the ship radiates elegance and is maintained with a devoted touch. Each passenger enjoys a spacious suite, most with a picturesque balcony overlooking the sea.

The Silver Spirit can house 608 guests but feels intimate due to its crew of 411 members. This impressive crew-to-passenger ratio makes boarding and disembarking a breeze and ensures passengers receive top-notch care throughout the voyage. The crew is dedicated to keeping the ship immaculate, even touch-up painting during port calls to maintain its pristine condition.

The Silver Spirit boasts a generous amount of relaxation space. The azure pool heats up delightfully as spring arrives in the Aegean. Surrounding the pool are on-deck Jacuzzis for a relaxing soak. Attentive waiters deliver refreshing drinks and nibbles while you lounge by the water or dine at the outdoor restaurant. Climb a flight of stairs, and you'll discover Spaccanapoli, offering some of the finest Sicilian and Neapolitan pizza at sea.

Onboard service was flawless, friendly, and uplifting. Upon returning from offshore excursions, the staff's heartfelt "Welcome home" made every guest feel special. Maya Angelou once said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." The Silver Spirit does an incredible job of making guests feel cherished.

Silversea's ships, including the Silver Spirit, feature a team of well-trained butlers to cater to each passenger's needs on their deck. These friendly, personable individuals undergo an extensive 108-point training program. Their mission is to handle every detail, from laundry to room service to cleaning glasses, so guests can savor their vacation without worries. In the evening, butlers wear smart black tuxedos, adding an extra touch of sophistication.

Narsiso, our corridor's butler, embodied this exceptional service. Late-night snacks would miraculously appear in our room, and he ensured our suite was impeccably clean. Whether it was filling the fruit bowl or setting up a table for our room service meals, his attention to detail was remarkable.

Strike One: Luxury Cruise Liner Encountering Early Troubles

The service commitment extended beyond our suite, from the pool to the poker table in the casino. Even on the ship's exclusive restaurants, managers accommodated our schedule when excursions ran late, ensuring we enjoyed exquisite meals without clock-watching.

The food served on the Silver Spirit was truly divine, with delicious and inventive dishes each day. The ship's impressive kitchen team managed to obtain fresh berries every morning, despite the challenge of sourcing fresh ingredients during sea travels. You could work off those calories in the well-equipped gym or take a morning jog along the jogging path, Troy-style.

After dinner, the lounges were cozy, the cocktails were strong, and the pianist played our requested Elton John tunes. Live performances graced the ship, from Broadway medleys to Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta tributes in Grease. We savored most dining options, from casual to formal, with open seating for breakfast and lunch and a la carte dining at night.

The dress code on the Silver Spirit is classified as 'relaxed luxury casual.' Silversea terms it as 'Elegant Casual,' but the atmosphere remains unstuffy. If you're after a high-end French dining experience, reserve a spot at La Dame, their intimate, bespoke French restaurant. With an additional $60 per person charge and formal attire required, the extraordinary food and wines make it an unmissable experience for Francophile foodies.

One of my favorite areas on the ship was the Observation Lounge. Fitted with floor-to-ceiling windows and styled like a clubby library, the telescope served as the room's centerpiece. After 6 PM, you could enjoy a sublime cocktail as you watched the sunset and gazed at the starry skies. A perfect writer's retreat, it offers a serene escape for moments of solitude or intimate conversation.

Silversea offers extraordinary special events, like the classical concert we attended in the ancient city of Ephesus. But it's Silversea's meticulous attention to detail, from the unobtrusive yet impeccable service to the comfortable lounges and charming pool deck, that makes every guest feel pampered as they embark on their personal journey.
