It's a bittersweet goodbye - the iconic Beach Bar 54° North, nestled at Ording Beach, is being knocked down. Katharina Schirmbeck, Director of Tourism in St. Peter-Ording, shares her emotional farewell, acknowledging it as a necessary step towards coastal protection and the sustainability of their thriving vacation region.

The demolition of the landmark beach establishment was mandated by the State Agency for Coastal Protection, National Park and Marine Conservation Schleswig-Holstein (LKN) and the Wadden Sea National Park. Safety reasons were also highlighted by the Tourism Center as a factor in the decision.

A Cultural Landmark

The pile-dwelling structure, which stands submerged during high tide, is losing stability due to this constant submersion. Previous reports suggest that tourism officials have arranged a special commemoration for the building's many admirers, intending to preserve 54 piles from the pier and the enormous wooden structure beneath the building for later auction.

Schirmbeck reflects on the building's everlasting impact on the local community: "This pile-dwelling has left an indelible mark on our region's collective memory - as a celebrated gathering spot, a snap-worthy backdrop, and a treasure trove of memories." She adds, "In this spirit, we're thrilled that the essence of the old beach bar continues at a new location."

Residents and visitors need not miss an observation platform offering culinary delights atop a lofty height in the future. The Beach Bar 54° North is relocating to a spot 250 meters inland.
