Blunk Space Presents 'Rio Kobayashi + Fritz Rauh': A Dialogue Between Past & Present
From January 18 to March 1, 2025, Blunk Space in Point Reyes Station, California, will host an intriguing exhibition titled 'Rio Kobayashi + Fritz Rauh'. This event aims to bridge the gap between past and present, celebrating the legacy of JB Blunk and his artistic connections. The exhibition will showcase new works by London-based furniture designer Rio Kobayashi, known for blending modernist sensibilities with traditional Japanese aesthetics, alongside historic famous paintings by Marin County's own Fritz Rauh.
Kobayashi, of Japanese and Austrian descent, was recently named a future icon in the design world. For this exhibition, he created a series of new pieces at the historic Blunk House in Inverness, California, using salvaged redwood. The Blunk House, built by JB Blunk on the land of British surrealist painter Gordon Onslow Ford in the late 1950s and early 1960s, serves as a fitting backdrop for Kobayashi's work. Blunk and Rauh were prominent artists in Marin County during its thriving art scene in the 1950s and 1960s, known for their organic sculptures and hallucinogenic paintings respectively.
Mariah Nielson, Blunk's daughter and director of the JB Blunk Estate, found striking similarities between Rauh's paintings and Kobayashi's furniture designs. This exhibition will highlight these connections, creating a dialogue between the past and present artistic expressions.
The 'Rio Kobayashi + Fritz Rauh' exhibition at Blunk Space promises to be a unique and captivating event. By bringing together Kobayashi's modernist, Japanese-influenced designs and Rauh's historic, Marin County-inspired famous paintings, the exhibition celebrates the enduring spirit of artistic innovation and dialogue. Blunk Space is located at 11101 CA-1 #105, Point Reyes Station, CA 94956, and the exhibition runs from January 18 to March 1, 2025.
