Designers Laura and Deanna Fanning of Kiko Kostadinov offer their city tour of Melbourne
In the vibrant city of Melbourne, art and fashion intertwine to create a unique cultural tapestry. This month, we shine the spotlight on two influential figures in the local fashion landscape – sisters Laura and Deanna Fanning.
Based in London, these talented creators are the driving force behind the womenswear line for Kiko Kostadinov, a brand that made its debut in 2018. Their designs, an offshoot of the Bulgarian designer's eponymous label, have been captivating audiences with their distinct aesthetic.
As co-creative directors, Laura and Deanna have been instrumental in shaping the vision of the Kiko Kostadinov woman. Drawing inspiration from various eras, their A/W 2025 collection showcased at Paris Fashion Week, was a testament to their innovative approach. The collection, a mash-up of styles, took inspiration from Vali Myers, an Australian dancer who lived amongst Paris' bohemian community in the 1950s, and the rebellious Teddy Girls of the same decade.
The duo's designs reflect their personal interests, such as sci-fi movies of the 1960s, golden-age glamour, and their family matriarchs. Their designs are characterised by offbeat pattern-cutting, intriguing use of colour, and a futuristic sheen – elements borrowed from the brand's successful menswear line.
Their role extends beyond design, with Laura and Deanna featuring prominently in collaborations and brand campaigns. Their unique and exploratory design voice is a key part of the Kiko Kostadinov brand's identity.
Meanwhile, in Melbourne's city centre, Seb Brown's contemporary jewellery studio and showroom, designed by architect Sean Godsell, offers a different kind of artistic experience.
Elsewhere in the city, cultural landmarks abound. The Heide Museum of Modern Art, named after the Heidelberg School, an Australian art movement of the late 19th century, is a public art institution and sculpture park in Bulleen, Melbourne.
For those seeking a taste of the Mediterranean, Carnation Canteen in Fitzroy offers a weekly changing menu and a delightful wine list. And for a stunning view of the city, Siglo, situated above the Melbourne Supper Club, offers broad vistas of Spring Street, Parliament House, and St Patrick's Cathedral.
In the heart of the city, Curtin House houses an array of restaurants, bars, design studios, a rooftop cinema, and retail stores such as PAM and Dot Comme. Nearby, Perimeter Books, an art and design publisher, distributor, and bookstore, is a treasure trove for art enthusiasts.
We acknowledge the Bunurong and Wurundjeri peoples as the traditional custodians of the land and waters where these landmarks are located.
