DFDS promises "further advancements" to islanders, affirms Minister
In a speech delivered at a Chamber of Commerce event, Economic Development Minister Lyndon Farnham announced a significant commitment from DFDS to invest £300 million in new vessels for Jersey's routes. This investment is part of the concession agreement between DFDS and Jersey, and the first of these brand new vessels is expected to operate on the southern route by 2028.
Since commencing its Jersey sailings at the end of March, DFDS has been working diligently to improve its service. The company has already made strides in this regard, with a 9% increase in sailings in Q2 2025 compared to the same period last year. DFDS has also carried 4% more visitors last month than in August 2024.
However, Chief Minister Farnham previously acknowledged concerns that the level of service delivered by DFDS so far falls short of what was promised. Deputy Kirsten Morel, who also addressed the issue, mentioned that the transition period has not always been smooth. Nevertheless, both officials sought to reassure islanders that they will continue to see more improvements from DFDS.
One of the challenges DFDS has addressed is mobilising a new service in just three months, a feat made possible by the company's swift adaptation and responsiveness to feedback. This includes updates to schedules following feedback from retailers, as well as adjustments to company policies on dogs, horses, and bicycles based on islanders' requests.
In the coming months, DFDS is expected to implement a frequent traveller scheme and coordinate marketing in France with Visit Jersey. The Minister also expects to see improvements in the onboard experience on the Levante Jet vessel. Deputy Morel is confident that more improvements will be seen as DFDS refines their service.
Meanwhile, St Malo's major port redevelopment is set to begin this Autumn. This redevelopment is anticipated to further enhance the overall service quality for passengers travelling between Jersey and France.
Despite the challenges faced, both the Minister and Deputy Morel remain optimistic about the future of DFDS's service in Jersey. With the upcoming investments in new vessels and the continuous efforts to improve service quality, it seems that Jersey's ferry services are on the path to delivering the promised improvements.
