In the heart of Southeastern Estonia, nestled among the forests, stands a solitary tower. This towering structure is the life's work of a man named Kalju, and it is the subject of the acclaimed documentary "Tower" by Estonian filmmaker Kullar Viimne.

"Tower" offers a rare and intimate glimpse into Kalju's life, delving into his diaries, audio recordings, and daily routine. The film was supported by the Estonian Film Institute (EFI) and the Cultural Endowment of Estonia, and it premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) in 2024.

Kalju lives on a high hill, a solitary figure after his wife left him, taking their young daughter with her. The tower-building project, which spans decades, is his attempt to reach beyond his isolation.

Director Kullar Viimne was drawn to Kalju's inner world, specifically his silence, longing, and expectation. He hopes viewers will feel Kalju's story in their hearts and understand the poetic way one man can make the world visible to himself.

"Tower" explores themes of longing, lost love, and the quiet that shapes human relationships. The film was produced by Erik Norkroos and Mirjam Jegorov, with music by Erki Pärnoja and sound direction by Harmo Kallaste.

In recognition of his work, Kullar Viimne won the 2024 Cultural Endowment of Estonia's annual audiovisual arts endowment for "Tower". This documentary is a testament to the power of human resilience and the beauty that can be found in solitude.
