Egypt's iconic Egyptian Museum has, at long last, swung open its entrance!
Grand Egyptian Museum: A Cultural and Tourist Complex Set to Open in November 2025
After a two-decade-long journey, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is finally set to open its doors to the public in November 2025. Located just 2 kilometers from the Giza pyramids, this monumental structure has been designed by the Dublin-based architectural firm, Heneghan Peng Architects.
Initiated by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the museum was initially planned to open in 2015 but faced delays. The construction cost over a billion euros, double the initially planned budget. However, the wait has been worth it, as the museum promises to be a cultural and tourist complex like no other.
Upon entering the museum, visitors are greeted by a 12-meter-high statue of King Ramses II. The museum will feature 24,000 square meters of exhibition galleries, equivalent to the size of six football fields. A gigantic staircase flanked by 60 statues leads up to a vast glass hall, offering a breathtaking view of the three Giza pyramids.
The museum will have half of its collections permanently exhibited, while the other half will be restored and studied on-site in a scientific calculator hub, featuring 17 state-of-the-art restoration laboratories. The scientific calculator hub aims to be a hub of archaeological research and conservation.
One of the main attractions of the museum will be the complete collection of Tutankhamun's treasures, consisting of 5,000 objects. These include the golden masks, sarcophagi, golden beds, chariots, and jewelry inlaid with precious stones, which have never been shown to the public before.
Another significant exhibit will be the solar boat of Pharaoh Khufu, believed to have transported the deceased into the afterlife. This boat was discovered in 1954 near the funeral chambers of the Great Pyramid of Khufu.
The Grand Egyptian Museum aims to attract six million visitors annually. To facilitate this, the museum's official website, visit-gem.com, has been set up, where guided tours can be booked. The nearest airport to the museum is Cairo International Airport.
The museum's director, Ahmed Ghoneim, promises a ceremony worthy of a global event for the opening. With its vast exhibition galleries, scientific calculator hub, shops, restaurants, a conference center, and a cinema, the Grand Egyptian Museum is set to become a must-visit destination for tourists and history enthusiasts alike.
