Record-Breaking 2024/2025 Cruise Season in Madeira

Madeira, Portugal, has experienced an exceptional high cruise season, with a remarkable 23.05% increase in passengers to 743,699. This surge in visitors has contributed significantly to the regional economy, generating an estimated €62.8 million.

The success of this season can be attributed to several key factors. Firstly, the Regional Secretariat for the Economy's strong commitment to supporting and promoting the cruise sector has facilitated infrastructure and operational improvements at the ports. This collaborative effort extended to the entire port community, including shipping agents, tourism companies, taxi drivers, and ship supply businesses, enhancing the overall visitor experience and operational efficiency.

Madeira's appeal as a year-round resort destination for cruise itineraries also played a significant role. The mild climate, hospitality of the Madeiran people, and rich natural and cultural attractions such as the UNESCO-listed laurel forests and famed Madeira wine continue to draw visitors.

The season's success is also reflected in the increased number of cruise calls to the main ports of Funchal and Porto Santo. A total of 335 cruise ships docked at Madeira's ports during the season, a 17.13% increase compared to the previous year. This growth in port calls suggests higher cruise ship traffic and port capacity utilization.

Moreover, the season saw a rise in crew members by 26.71%. This increase suggests that more or larger cruise ships are calling Madeira, contributing further to local economic benefits.

APRAM, the Port Authority of Madeira, described the season as "exceptional" and "by far the best for Madeira's ports." The first quarter of 2025 also showed strong growth, indicating that the momentum from the 2024 season is carrying over into the new year.

The economic impact of this record-breaking season extends beyond the cruise ships themselves. The average daily spending per passenger or crew member is €61.40, contributing to an estimated €63 million in regional revenue, up from €50.5 million in the previous season.

Looking forward, APRAM forecasts continued growth in the cruise industry, promising even more opportunities for Madeira to thrive as a popular cruise destination. The 2024/2025 high cruise season in Madeira marks a new era of success for the region, with its ports welcoming a record number of passengers and crew, and generating substantial economic benefits.

Travelers continued to flock to Madeira during the 2024/2025 cruise season, seeking unique experiences and cultural attractions, enriching the lifestyle of locals by infusing €63 million into the regional economy. This growth in tourism also encouraged an increase in lifestyle and travel opportunities, as the success of the season has fueled the anticipation for future cruise calls and the development of improved travel experiences.
