EU Proposes Stricter Animal Transport Rules; Baden-Württemberg Leads Enforcement
The European Commission has proposed a new regulation to enhance animal protection during transport, including stricter rules for long journeys to distant third countries. This was announced in December 2023. Baden-Württemberg has been actively advocating for improved practical animal protection within these discussions.
In a show of commitment to these new regulations, Ministers Thomas Strobl and Peter Hauk recently visited an inspection in the Rhein-Neckar district. They assessed the compliance of animal transport vehicles with existing animal welfare regulations. These inspections, conducted bi-annually by local veterinary authorities and police, ensure the wellbeing of animals and enhance road safety during transport.
The state of Baden-Württemberg has established the Taskforce Animal Transport to pool expertise and ensure high-quality implementation of animal welfare regulations and procedures. This taskforce is responsible for licensing transport companies and vehicles for long-term animal transports, ensuring compliance with animal welfare regulations during transport.
The European Commission's proposed regulation aims to improve animal protection during transport, with stricter rules for long journeys. Baden-Württemberg, through its Taskforce Animal Transport, is committed to enforcing these regulations, as demonstrated by recent inspections and its active participation in the discussion of the proposed regulation.
