EU's New Mediterranean Pact to Combat Climate Change Unveiled in October 2025

The European Commission is set to unveil the New Mediterranean Pact in mid-October 2025. This roadmap aims to assess the Mediterranean's context and tackle its major challenges, with a key focus on combating climate change.

The pact has been shaped by diverse inputs from civil society, the economy, science, and coastal communities of the Mediterranean. It will be a set of strategies aimed at adopting measures against climate change, including promoting green entrepreneurship, sustainable tourism, and a sustainable maritime economy.

The upcoming pact was a central theme at the 2025 MedCat Days held in Barcelona. Researchers such as Annelies Broekman, Ana Pérez, and Sergio Ponsá shared their insights and findings at the event. Broekman presented results from the Mission for Natural Heritage project.

The New Mediterranean Pact, to be made public next month, is expected to provide a comprehensive approach to addressing climate change and other challenges in the Mediterranean region. The pact's strategies, informed by various stakeholders, are poised to drive sustainable development and resilience along the Mediterranean shores.
