Exploration of Tourism within Saxony-Anhalt during July 2025

In the heart of Germany, the tourism sector in Saxony-Anhalt has shown a mix of positive and negative trends in July 2025.

According to the latest data from the monthly tourism survey, a total of 1,051 accommodation establishments were open, a slight decrease from the 1,065 that were operational in July 2024. The survey, which includes establishments with 10 or more beds, provides insights into the region's tourism performance.

The data reveals a decline in both domestic and international tourism. Among domestic guests, there was a 4.2% decrease in guest arrivals and a 4.8% decrease in overnight stays. Halle, Saale, Unstrut, and Anhalt-Wittenberg were particularly affected, with Halle, Saale, Unstrut experiencing a 4.6% decrease in guest arrivals and a 5.9% decrease in overnight stays. The Harz and Harz foothills also reported a 5.2% decrease in guest arrivals and an 8.3% decrease in overnight stays. Anhalt-Wittenberg saw a 8.2% decrease in guest arrivals and a 5.4% decrease in overnight stays.

However, not all regions in Saxony-Anhalt have experienced a decline. Magdeburg, Elbe-Börde-Heide, and Altmark have shown positive trends. Magdeburg, Elbe-Börde-Heide was the only region to report an increase in both guest arrivals (+3.0%) and overnight stays (+3.3%). The Altmark region, while experiencing a decrease in guest arrivals (-3.6%), saw an increase in overnight stays (+0.5%).

The survey also provides information on the guest origin, with 86.8% of guests coming from within Germany. The average length of stay for guests was 2.6 days, slightly lower than the 2.7 days recorded in July 2024.

International guests, however, showed a slight increase, with a 0.5% rise in guest arrivals and a 0.7% increase in overnight stays.

In terms of accommodation types, holiday centers were the only ones to see increases in both guests and overnight stays (+3.4% guests; +7.8% overnight stays). Other types such as inns (-13.6% guests; -15.4% overnight stays), camping sites (-3.6% guests, -12.3% overnight stays), and pensions (-6.7% guests; -6.3% overnight stays) experienced decreases.

The occupancy rate for July 2025 was 36.6%, down from 38.2% in July 2024. Unfortunately, no new information about the performance of these accommodation types, including holiday centers, inns, camping sites, and pensions, was provided in this report.

Despite the challenges, regional projects and efforts to strengthen tourism in Saxony-Anhalt are ongoing, as highlighted by the data. However, no specific public information has been identified linking these declines to particular companies or institutions in the regions of Halle, Saale, Unstrut, Anhalt-Wittenberg, and Harz/Harz Füßenbergen.
