Exploring Camping in the Netherlands: A Journey in the Recreational Vehicle, Accompanied by Family Heirlooms

Rüdiger and Petra Erbsloh have embarked on a new adventure, traveling through the Netherlands in their recently purchased camper van. On July 6, 2025, at 9:30, they set off on this exciting journey, marking the premiere of their camper van adventure.

Their itinerary includes visits to the Hanseatic cities of Kampen and Deventer, both steeped in medieval history and cultural significance.

Kampen, a city with rich medieval roots, was an important trading center during the Middle Ages. Its well-preserved cobbled streets and ancient houses, along with its Gothic churches, make it a captivating destination. The city is also historically notable for events like the Siege of Kampen in the late 16th century during the Dutch revolt against Spain.

One of Kampen's unique attractions is an ancient cigar factory, where cigars are still made by hand in the present day.

After exploring Kampen, the Erbslohs plan to visit Deventer, a city that boasts one of the oldest settlements in the Netherlands, dating back to the Bronze Age. In the Middle Ages, Deventer was a significant trade hub due to its strategic location on the River IJssel and was a key member of the Hanseatic League.

The city's medieval architecture is a sight to behold, with landmarks such as the early 13th century Romanesque St. Nicholas Church and the towering St. Lebuinus Church, whose 62-meter-high tower offers panoramic views. The Museum De Waag, housed in a 16th-century weighing house, showcases the city's social, cultural, and artistic history.

Deventer also preserves its Hanseatic past through historic merchant houses now hosting the Toy Museum, which features an extensive collection reflecting various historical eras. The city’s cultural scene is vibrant, with traditional Dutch culinary specialities celebrated in local restaurants.

Rüdiger and Petra Erbsloh's exploration of these cities is likely to emphasize their significance as centers of medieval trade and culture within the Hanseatic League, underscoring their well-preserved historical sites and ongoing cultural traditions that reflect this illustrious past.

The cities today offer a blend of historical exploration and cultural experiences rooted in their Hanseatic heritage. Truus, a city guide, is certain that Deventer is the most beautiful city in the world, while Petra van de Zande's restaurant in the Netherlands employs people with disabilities, providing a unique dining experience.

After their visit to Kampen, the Erbslohs encountered sand art by world record holders Eugenia Kolot and Martin Tedder on their camping tour, adding another layer of cultural richness to their journey. The Erbslohs bought their camper van after the Corona outbreak, and their travels have already taken them to Kampen. They are eagerly anticipating their visit to Deventer.

As they continue their journey, Rüdiger and Petra Erbsloh are sure to uncover more of the Netherlands' hidden gems, learning about the differences between the Dutch and the Germans along the way, as they did at Petra van de Zande's restaurant. Their camper van adventure promises to be an unforgettable journey through the country's history and culture.

The Erbsloh's upcoming visit to Deventer, following their exploration of Kampen, will allow them to experience another Hanseatic city that offers a unique blend of historical and cultural experiences, rooted in its medieval trade and cultural heritage. As they traverse the country in their camper van, their other lifestyle choices will include trying traditional Dutch cuisine and learning about the cultural differences between the Dutch and Germans.
