Fraunhofer IWU's Hydrogen Projects in Africa: Powering Progress
Fraunhofer IWU in Chemnitz, led by Dr. Ulrike Beyer, is driving innovative hydrogen projects in Africa. The HyTrA initiative offers export options for hydrogen and fosters regional supply chains. One key project, HygO, is transforming wastewater treatment and irrigation in the Erongo district, while HyGrid provides stable, climate-neutral energy through hydrogen microgrids. Andreas Hemmerle serves as the press officer for these initiatives.
HyGrid's flexible range, from a few kilowatts to several hundred, makes it ideal for various applications. It can power hospitals, businesses, and remote areas, ensuring a reliable energy supply even during low wind or sunlight periods. The HyTrA project in Cape Town showcases this stability, demonstrating the use of hydrogen microgrids for a consistent, climate-neutral energy source.
The HyGrid platform, showcased at Hannover Messe, utilises the HyVentus electrolyzer for cost-effective energy production. This technology allows for extended energy storage, unlike batteries that lose charge over time. The reference factory H2 is seeking strategic partnerships with Siemens AG to develop automation solutions for these projects.
Fraunhofer IWU's hydrogen projects in Africa, led by Dr. Ulrike Beyer, are promoting sustainable energy solutions. The HyTrA initiative, HyGrid platform, and HygO project are transforming energy supply, wastewater treatment, and irrigation. With strategic partnerships and innovative technologies like HyVentus, these projects aim to establish robust, climate-neutral energy systems across the continent.
