French Favorite Summer Getaway: Island of Ré Emerges as Top Tourist Destination as Per Survey Results

In a recent survey conducted by Elabe, the dream destinations for summer holidays among French tourists have been unveiled. The survey, which polled a representative sample of 2,002 metropolitan residents aged 18 and over, revealed a growing interest in local tourism among the French.

The island of Ré, off the coast of Charente-Maritime, emerged as the most popular summer holiday destination for the French, with a score of 1,166. The island of Oléron followed closely behind, boasting a score of 958. These island destinations, known for their picturesque beaches and tranquil atmosphere, have proven to be a hit among tourists seeking a relaxing getaway.

Corsica, another island destination, took the third spot, with multiple locations on the island appearing in the Top 10. The charm of Corsica, with its rugged landscapes and crystal-clear waters, has long been a draw for French holidaymakers.

Other popular destinations include Ajaccio, with a score of 911, and Bonifacio, with a score of 863. Saint-Jean-de-Luz scored 492, while Biarritz and Noirmoutier-en-l'Île earned scores of 599 and 550, respectively.

Interestingly, the survey found that island destinations are popular across all political colours. The Bretons, for instance, prefer Quiberon and Saint-Malo as their summer holiday destinations, while retirees tend to choose Noirmoutier as their preferred summer holiday spot.

Annecy, known for its stunning lake and medieval architecture, is particularly popular among 18-34 year-olds. Calm and affordable prices are factors that attract tourists to the Loire department, making it a favourite among many.

The survey combined 1,475 communes and retained only 300 for the final ranking. Respondents were allowed to suggest any commune they wanted, even if it was not on the list. La Rochelle, for example, scored 696, while residents of Pays de la Loire favour Les Sables-d'Olonne as their summer holiday destination.

In conclusion, the survey provides valuable insights into the preferences of French tourists for summer holidays. While the exact rankings may vary, it is clear that island destinations, Corsica, and the Riviera continue to be popular choices.
