Hanoi's Creative Revolution

HANOI, VIETNAM — Five years after joining UNESCO's Creative Cities Network, Hanoi, Vietnam's capital, continues to uphold its international obligations and forge ahead as a vanguard of design and innovation. According to Bach Lieuzen Huong, Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, its objective is to promote sustainable development while asserting its identity as a city melding Civilisation, Culture, and Modernity.

On May 6, an event was held to announce the launch of the Hanoi Creative Activities Coordination Centre and to invite participation in the Hanoi Creative Cultural Space Network. During the event, Huong emphasized the remarkable growth experienced by Hanoi's creative community over the past few years, with creative spaces evolving into dynamic hubs for design, arts, crafts, and startups.

These creative spaces not only breed new ideas but also serve as bridges between tradition and modernity, fostering connections between local and international communities. Thanks to the passion and perseverance of the creative sector, Hanoi's cultural landscape has become richly diverse—a "nucleus of innovation" that plays a crucial role in defining the city's creative identity, bolstering the creative economy, and projecting a vibrant, youthful image rooted deeply in heritage.

The city has executed a variety of coordinated initiatives to actualize these goals. These include new policies under the Capital Law, the drafting of a resolution to establish a Cultural Industry Centre, and the creation of Cultural Trade and Service Zones to nurture and expand the creative ecosystem.

In terms of infrastructure, Hanoi is investing in creative spaces by repurposing industrial heritage and cultural facilities to form breeding grounds for burgeoning creativity. The city also aims to expand its domestic and international creative networks, encourage international cooperation, and knowledge exchange through events like awards, festivals, and cultural-creative gatherings.

A cornerstone achievement is the establishment of the Hanoi Creative Activities Coordination Centre, which seeks to centralize resources, aid in the development of creative spaces, enhance the value of creative products, and expand their market access to fuel the city's creative economy.

Conveyed by Huong was the hope that the creative community would continue to align with Hanoi's vision for cultural development by proposing innovative ideas, embracing new technologies, and making creativity accessible, particularly to the youthful demographic.

Jonathan Baker, UNESCO Representative in Vietnam, commended Hanoi's initiative to establish the creative space network, describing it as a strategic move to unite, recognize, and support the myriad creative actors in the city. UNESCO encourages all creative spaces, regardless of size or status, to participate in this ecosystem.

Currently, Hanoi hosts the most creative cultural spaces in Vietnam. Since Hanoi entered the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2019 under the design category, it has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the development of its cultural industry. With a clear vision and solid foundations, Hanoi stands poised to remain a breeding ground for creativity, connection, and international cultural integration.
