Highway to Gramphu-Kaza Reopened following a 7-month closure
After a strenuous 69-day operation, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has successfully restored the Gramphu-Kaza Highway, which had been closed for over seven months due to heavy snowfall. However, as of June 27, 2025, the road remains closed for tourist vehicles.
The highway, passing through the Kunzum Pass at an altitude of 14,931 ft, is now open for 4x4 vehicle movement. An inspection of the road will be conducted on Wednesday to assess its suitability for civilian traffic movement, and a decision on opening the road for all traffic will be made after prioritizing public safety concerns.
The closure is primarily due to persistent winter snow and ongoing road conditions in the high-altitude district of Lahaul and Spiti, where snow coverage lasts much of the year, with significant temperature drops in winter. The best time to expect this route to open fully is usually in summer (late June to early October) when snow has melted and road conditions improve.
The development is expected to provide a significant boost to the local tourism business once the road is fully open, as it offers stunning vistas of the Himalayan range and allows travellers to explore the breathtaking beauty of Spiti valley from the Manali and Lahaul side.
However, it may take some time to open the road for all kinds of tourist vehicles due to the snowy path. Travelers are advised to monitor official road status updates from Lahaul and Spiti district sources for real-time information.
The restoration of the highway has brought joy to the residents of Spiti valley, particularly those associated with the tourism industry. The Kaza administration will decide when to allow civilian traffic on the road.

However, travelers should carefully monitor updates from Lahaul and Spiti District Administration for further announcements on its suitability for all tourist vehicles.
