Emilia and Noah continue to dominate the chart of popular baby names in North Rhine-Westphalia based on the German Language Society's 2024 analysis. This trend echoes the parents' preference in 2023.
In terms of Germany as a whole, Noah maintains its top position for boy names, with Emilia trailing closely behind in the second spot. Sophia, on the other hand, reclaims the crown as the most popular girl name, having held this position in the previous year too.
As noted by GfdS CEO Andrea Ewels, based in Wiesbaden, parents tend to pick names that they find pleasant and sonorously appealing-short, easily pronounced, and internationally understandable ones with vowel endings like Noah, Sophia, Emilia, or Luca.
Analyzing the names in NRW, Sophia and Emma follow Emilia in the girls' rankings, with varying spellings. Noah occupies the second position for boys, while Matheo and Mohammed complete the top three, even with different spellings like Mohamed and Muhammed.
Consistently since 1977, the GfdS has been publishing an overview of the most frequently recorded names, which is based on data from registry offices across Germany. This year, nearly 92 percent of all names given in the country were recorded through the participation of approximately 750 registry offices and submission of nearly 900,000 individual names.
