indulging in spa relaxation and immersing in historical charm: experiencing spas and the history of Karlovy Vary
Dropping by Karlovy Vary, a toy shop for adults, had me buzzing with excitement! Stumbling upon the warming waters of their springs isn't just comforting on a chilly day, it warms the soul, too.
These simple springs draw folks together, chatting away while warming up on the snowy winter days. For those like me, searching for a piece of the Spa Cup crew, these water sources serve up curiosity and a ready-made souvenir.
hidden away in the forest of West Bohemia, this European spa town has long been tantalizing tourists with its soothing waters and wellness benefits. Over the years, a throng of famous faces, such as Beethoven and Goethe, have visited today's grand spa hotels, public baths, beautiful forests, stunning architecture, intricate colonnades, and towering buildings rising and falling across these hills. But it's not just a pampering playground; Karlovy Vary is a city of culture and creativity, glowing with charm from every angle.
I'm not exactly a 'relax at a spa getaway' kind of guy, but the charm of Karlovy Vary lured me in for a side trip from Prague's bustling Christmas markets. Scouting out accommodations online, I eventually settled on a traditional-looking hotel nestled outside the city. Equipped with a modern wellness center, forests at my doorstep, and the delightful streets of Karlovy Vary mere minutes away, it seemed I was on my way to becoming a 'relax at a spa getaway' kinda guy.
Retiring to the Retro Riverside Wellness Resort
Karlovy Vary boasts a plethora of charming spa resorts, and while I weighed the affordable Parkhotel Richmond, I ultimately selected the wallet-friendly Retro Riverside Wellness Resort. Drawn in by the resort's fairy-tale architecture, I found a tranquil escape amidst the trees, with direct access to the river and little boats in the summer months, perfect for viewing the city from a unique vantage point.
The fare was top-notch, the service attentive, and the rooms cozy, complete with serene balconies. I almost booked a suite in the tower, boasting a corner bathroom with a view, but decided it was a tad lavish for a restless soul like me. The spa, however, was an absolute highlight, offering a serene pool and beautifully decorated facilities. It seems I may be converting to the spa getaway lifestyle after all!
Now, onto the more important stuff, "What to do in Karlovy Vary itself?"
Falling for the Spa Cup Concept
Perhaps you're used to hitting up souvenir shops at the end of your journey. In Karlovy Vary, head there first, as a handy souvenir awaits - the iconic porcelain spa cups.
These cups possess a unique design, with a spout attached starting close to the base, as if a mug and a teapot had a child. Use them to warm yourself up by the city's springs amidst your explorations. Be careful, though; some of the waters can be scorching hot. And if you're like me (British through and through), feel free to keep tea bags on hand, too. How many places allow you to brew your own cuppa from a city spring? Karlovy Vary is a truly lesser-visited gem in Europe.
Most of the central springs can be found under the city's colonnades. Take your time to explore the various fountains; the temperatures and designs seem to vary slightly between each spring.
Marveling at the Architecture and Waters
Karlovy Vary doesn't just impress with its waters; this enchanting city boasts grand, mysterious architecture, too. While neo-Baroque and neo-Renaissance styles dominate the landscape, you'll find a beautiful mix of architectural styles dotting the cityscape. And the best part? Exploring the historic center on foot is a breeze, mainly following the Tepla River that flows majestically through the pedestrianized area.
Many of the most stunning buildings cater to spas and thermal pools, but even the Baroque Church of St. Mary Magdalene, with its ornate façade, and the grand spa hotels are impressive sights in their own right. The Mill Colonnade, famed for its hot spring and local attraction, might be your friend's next photographic backdrop, while I preferred the wooden-carved Market Colonnade and cast-iron Park Colonnade, transformed into a concert hall.
To Spa or Not to Spa in Central Karlovy Vary
If your hotel doesn't offer spa facilities, or if you're looking to try a different spot, fear not. There are various options in the city center to pamper yourself. The Elizabeth Bath is a popular choice. This grand, century-old building houses many wellness treatments and hot spring waters. Continue down the road, and you'll spot a concrete building with a thermal pool overhanging the city - perfect for snagging an Instagram-worthy shot in the summer.
Unwind with a View
While strolling the city streets crooning to your spa cup and admiring the architecture, take the time to climb higher for breathtaking views. The backstreets themselves offer hidden scenery, and you'll find charming side streets and staircases leading to various viewpoints.
The Deer Jump Lookout has enchanting vistas of the city, while snapping a picture of the impressive Hotel Imperial will challenge your photography skills. One of the most famous lookout spots in the city is the Diana Tower. While I, unfortunately, skipped out on this viewpoint to save a few coins, it appears I missed out, as the photos from that vantage point look stunning. "Who hasn't been at the Diana Observation Tower hasn't seen Karlovy Vary," they say, and it seems they may be right!
Cherry Blossoms in Spring
Although I loved my winter visit, just before Christmas, when the festive decorations and snow added a touch of magic, I stumbled upon photos of Karlovy Vary in spring, and it looked equally enchanting. Dotted around the city and in squares during this time, you can witness the city's blooming cherry blossoms, adding even more color to the scenic landscape.
Getting to Karlovy Vary
Public transportation is an easy and affordable option if you don't have a car for your Czech Republic travels. In this case, choose a bus or coach over a train, as the route is more direct and frequent. The city offers its own public transport, and many hotels and spa resorts outside the center provide transfers to and from the city.
