International Cinema Festival featuring Indigenous Films will take place in Peru
The 15th International Film and Communication Festival of Indigenous Peoples is set to take place in Peru from June 20 to 28, 2025. This prestigious event, which celebrates and promotes indigenous voices through film and communication, will bring together filmmakers, organisations, and representatives from more than 20 countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, North America, and Europe.
The festival is organised by the Latin American Coordinating Committee of Indigenous Film and Communication (CLACPI), Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Jungle (AIDESEP), Amazonian Film School (ECA), and CHIRAPAQ Center of Indigenous Cultures of Peru. Submissions for the festival will begin in December 2024.
Over nine days, the festival will feature photographic exhibitions, exhibitions of indigenous pictorial art, and forums addressing key topics such as the evolution of indigenous cinema and its contribution to the strengthening of indigenous identity. An international workshop on indigenous cinema and communication will take place, where a balance of the challenges and obstacles to exercising the right to communication in the region will be drawn up.
Laboratories for the development of technical and creative skills of indigenous filmmakers will also be held. The festival aims to consolidate indigenous cinema in Peru, promoting its development as an intercultural tool. The theme of the festival is "Voices and Images of Our Mother Earth".
The award categories in this festival address major indigenous challenges such as territorial resistances led by women, ancestral knowledge as a response to climate change, specific issues of indigenous childhood, mobilizations in defence of Mother Earth, and the diversity of identity expressions. The main objective of the festival is to generate broad debate about climate change and its impact on indigenous ways of life.
Forums focused on climate change and its impact on indigenous peoples will be held, with special attention to state policies and indigenous proposals to address this global crisis. The festival will also include itinerant community screenings in Ayacucho, Lima, Loreto, and Ucayali, and projections in the main cities of these regions.
