International Reasons Prompting Employment Overseas
In a recent survey conducted by JobAbroad.de between October 2024 and January 2025, over 2,200 participants shared their reasons for seeking opportunities to work abroad. The findings reveal a diverse array of motivations, with experiencing new cultures and languages emerging as the primary driver.
The USA leads the pack as the most popular non-European destination, attracting 24.7% of the participants. Australia and Canada, tied at 21.6%, and New Zealand (17.4%) follow closely. The survey also highlighted the allure of the Swiss and Greek economies, as well as Scandinavian countries like Norway, Sweden, and the UK.
Within Europe, Spain tops the list as the most popular destination, followed by Italy and Portugal. Countries such as Norway, Estonia, Germany, and Greece are also favoured for their good internet, legal frameworks, and quality of life.
Interestingly, leaving Germany is a new motivator, ranking third in the survey. The UK, which previously held the second spot, has fallen to seventh place. France and Ireland are less popular, possibly due to high costs of living or language barriers.
On the other hand, some tropical or tax-friendly locations like the UAE and Cayman Islands, and Colombia, especially Medellín, are favoured by digital nomads and job seekers for their climate, cost of living, and tax advantages.
The theme of a good salary interests younger people, especially men, the most, while it plays virtually no role for those over 60. More variety and a change of scenery are also significant motivators.
Our website, a German-language service and news portal, provides comprehensive information about life and work abroad. It offers articles on mobile work abroad, digital nomad hotspots in 2025, and globalization in the workplace. Lea Fiebelkorn, an international expert, discusses mobile work abroad in a video, explaining the difference between mobile work and working from home and important aspects of tax law.
Younger people (18-29) are particularly drawn to new languages and cultures, while older age groups prioritize variety and a change of scenery. Boosting careers is a nice bonus but not the main reason for most participants.
