UN Tourism Executive Highlights Importance of Education and Technology in Sustainable Tourism at Bled Strategic Forum

At the Bled Strategic Forum, UN Tourism Executive Director Natalia Bayona emphasized the crucial role of education and investments in tourism technology for achieving sustainable development in the tourism sector.

Bayona stated that these elements are essential for fostering innovation, improving the quality and inclusiveness of tourism services, and reducing environmental impacts. Education equips the workforce with the skills and awareness needed for sustainable practices, while targeted investments in technology can help destinations manage resources efficiently and enhance visitor experiences in ways that benefit local communities and ecosystems.

During the event, Bayona also discussed the importance of rethinking education and training in the tourism sector. She highlighted the need for more and better-targeted investments into the sector, and advanced ideas for closer collaboration in the field of tourism education.

UN Tourism commended Slovenia for its work promoting sustainable tourism and attracting investments into the sector. A meeting with Slovenia's Minister of the Economy, Tourism and Sport Matjaz Han, was held to discuss boosting private investments. The UN Tourism delegation also advanced ideas for closer collaboration in the field of tourism education, with a meeting held with the Dean and key academic staff of the School of Economics and Business of the University of Ljubljana.

The possibility of offering Slovenian students international experience, whether through research placements, internships, or online courses, was also discussed. The UN Tourism Online Academy was mentioned as a potential platform for shared initiatives.

Over the past five years, $48 billion in venture capital has been invested in tourism technology, but no new information was provided about this at the event. Bayona concluded that innovation and education have the power to transform the tourism industry, and noted a collaboration between UN Tourism and Slovenia at the event.

The Bled Strategic Forum is recognised as the top international conference in Central and South-Eastern Europe, offering a platform to explore ideas on modern society and its future. UN Tourism Executive Director Natalia Bayona's emphasis on education and investments in tourism technology for sustainable development is expected to inspire further discussions and action in the sector.
