Investigating Incorporations within a Twelve-pointed Black Star Ruby

In a groundbreaking study, researchers have delved into the intricate world of star sapphires, shedding light on the role of ilmenite inclusions in creating the mesmerising star-like pattern that these gems are known for.

The research, focused on a 112.64-carat 'Ceylon Stars' black sapphire, revealed that most of the acicular inclusions were oriented perpendicular and oblique at 30, or parallel and oblique at 60° in relation to the growth bands of the host corundum. Interestingly, the average width of inclusions oriented perpendicular to the growth bands was narrower than those oriented parallel to them.

The study also identified ilmenite as the single mineral causing the 12-rayed asterism in the largest such gem known to the researchers. This finding is consistent with the sapphire's probable Sri Lankan origin, as the inclusion assemblage found in Thai stones differs significantly.

Ilmenite inclusions, with their characteristic Raman spectra showing strong bands at 678 cm and other vibration modes, were also found in a second set of inclusions in smaller 12-rayed star sapphires from Sri Lanka. Additionally, some larger plate-like shaped black inclusions reminiscent of magnetite were observed.

One sample from Sri Lanka even had a second network of inclusions consisting exclusively of rutile needles. This dual network of acicular inclusions was further identified as ilmenite through Raman spectroscopy.

The microstructure of the growth bands in the sapphire was observed under optical microscopy, revealing a mainly dark blue body colour with some areas showing a more violet hue. The sharpness of the rays in the sapphire was found to correlate to the width of the inclusions, regardless of the identity of the mineral that causes them.

The exsolution process in star corundum, particularly involving ilmenite, is a complex geological phenomenon. While the exact mechanisms of ilmenite exsolution in star corundum are yet to be fully understood, it is believed that this process involves the separation of ilmenite from a previously homogeneous high-temperature solution as it cools, leading to the formation of small, aligned inclusions that contribute to the star-like appearance.

This study offers valuable insights into the world of star sapphires, but for a comprehensive understanding of the geochemical processes involved in their formation, consulting specialized geological literature or research papers on mineralogy might be beneficial.
