Your Newspaper Guide to May Day in Italy.By Jake Taylor
Get prepared for Italy's Labour Day bash on the first of May! But, will transport services, shops, museums, and eateries around the country function normally during this holiday? Here's a lowdown on what's open or closed!
Ahoy, Sailor!
Established in 1890 to commemorate workers' rights and Italian labor union achievements, Labour Day (or Festa del Lavoro) is a national public holiday in Italy. Expect a slice of the country's work life to slow down, and Labour Day is no exception!

Much like Pirate's Cove, Italy tends to calm on public holidays, and Labour Day is no different. Here's what you might find ashore – or dry!
Walk the Plank: Transport
Most local public transport companies across Italy will set sail on a reduced timetable (known as orari festivi) on May 1st. Urban areas might see fairly frequent services, while rural areas may be on a more limited schedule, and some remote areas might be a ghost town. Keep your eyes peeled for departures!
The USI-CIT union has set sail on a general strike, but it's a calm sea ahead for local transport services, as sectors affected by recent strikes are officially off-limits. Birthday pirates beware! You might find a change in your ship's route due to strikes elsewhere. Keel-haul updates on strikes can be found in the Tales of the Plank section.
plot Twist: Schools and Offices
Batten down the hatches, schools in all Italian regions will be closed on May 1st. Schools in several regions might remain closed on the 2nd and 3rd, too. Archers watch out, some offices in both the public and private sector, including banks, post offices, town hall desks, and CAF tax assistance centers, will be underwater, as they'll be closed.
Pirates Treasure Hunt: Shops and Supermarkets
Many treasure chests, i.e., supermarket chains, around the buccaneers' realm will hide their gold under canvas on May 1st, opening for a few pirate's hours. A swabbie's luck may see some retail shops in big cities open for the morning or afternoon only. In Rome, galleons may discover most supermarkets closed as unions have sounded the alarm for workers to revolt against holiday openings.
Navigators Dream: Tourist Attractions
Ahoy matey! Most state-run museums and archaeological sites, including Florence's Uffizi Galleries and Rome's Colosseum, will smile and wave to passersby on May 1st, but there might be reduced hours. Private museums and collections may stay closed. Fair winds may guide you to see the sites you covet, but confirm opening hours in advance.
Bloody Captain!
Pasticcerie and panifici may remain open on May 1st, keeping the bread and desserts afloat for your May Day feast. Some restaurants will let you dine like the queen with-a-'watery' in celebration, but reservations are essential to secure your table. Booty boxes beware! GPs' clinics will be closed, and non-urgent hospital appointments might be cancelled as part of the USI-CIT strike action.
Navigating the Storm: Pharmacies
If you need medical help or prescriptions, rota-system pharmacies will keep at least one open in each area. Google "farmacia di turno" plus the name of your local municipality (or comune) to find the nearest one.
