Germany's Summer Holidays in Thuringia: A Week of Unusual Weather Ahead

As the end of summer vacation approaches, children in Thuringia, Germany, are gearing up for one more week of relaxation before the new school year begins. However, unlike the typical carefree days of summer, this year's holiday season is marked by a forecast of "rather unpleasant weather," according to the German Weather Service.

Thuringia's summer holidays, which traditionally fall in the warmer months, are scheduled to end shortly. While the exact dates vary across different German states, Thuringia's children have one more week of freedom ahead, starting from the current date.

The predicted weather is not limited to Thuringia, but extends across the country. The German Weather Service has forecasted hot and dry conditions with some regional heatwaves, a trend that has been observed in recent years due to climate change.

In early July 2025, Thuringia experienced a severe heatwave with wildfires, reflecting unusually high temperatures and very dry conditions. Average daytime temperatures in July around Gotha, a city in Thuringia, have been around 21–22°C (70–72°F), with nighttime lows around 12–14°C (54–57°F).

The change from Bavaria to Thuringia for the new school year may be challenging for some, as the duration of summer vacation varies among different regions in Germany. For instance, children in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria have already started their summer vacations, while Thuringia's children still have one more week to go.

As the school bells remain silent across the country during this time, museums and other tourist attractions could potentially benefit from the unfavorable weather during the summer holidays. The transition from one region to another for the new school year may require adjustment, but for now, families are enjoying their last days of summer before diving back into the routine of the new academic year.

Despite the scheduled end of the summer holidays, Thuringia's children still have a week left to enjoy their break, but they might need to adjust their travel plans due to the forecast of unusual weather. The travelers, who usually flock to Thuringia during summer to soak in its warm weather, may instead find an opportunity to explore its lifestyle and tourist attractions in cooler or rainy conditions.
