Lufthansa Launches Eurowings Discover for Long-Haul Tourism from FRA

Lufthansa Group is set to expand its long-haul tourist offerings from Frankfurt (FRA) with the launch of Eurowings Discover, coinciding with the end of a commercial agreement between Lufthansa and Condor in June 2021. The new airline will operate flights to Montego Bay, Jamaica (MBJ) and Varadero, Cuba (VRA) starting winter 2021/22.

Eurowings Discover will commence operations in early November, using Airbus A330-200 aircraft to fly to MBJ and VRA three times a week. The first flights to these destinations took off on December 2, 2021.

Competition on these routes will come from Condor, which will operate one weekly flight to MBJ and two weekly flights to VRA using Boeing 767-300s. Condor has argued that Lufthansa's decision to terminate their contract is an abuse of its dominant position, filing a complaint with Germany's cartel office.

Meanwhile, Lufthansa and SWISS have partnered with South African carrier Airlink through an interline agreement, covering over 45 destinations in South Africa and Southern Africa. Eurowings, the parent company of Eurowings Discover, is also expanding its long-haul offerings, with plans to resume flights to Barbados (BGI) and launch flights to Punta Cana (PUJ) in March 2021, and open routes to Anchorage (ANC), Las Vegas (LAS), and Mauritius (MRU) in June 2021.

The launch of Eurowings Discover marks a significant expansion of Lufthansa Group's long-haul tourist offerings from FRA. The new airline will provide competition on routes to MBJ and VRA, while Condor has expressed concerns about Lufthansa's market dominance. The new interline agreement with Airlink and Eurowings' own expansion plans indicate a growing focus on long-haul tourism.
