Luxury Yachts: Spotlight on the Three-Quarter Tonner 'Impeccable'
The Renewed Glory of "Impeccable": A Legendary Yacht Returns to the Racing Scene
After undergoing an extensive restoration, the Doug Peterson Three Quarter Tonner "Impeccable" has been relaunched in 2022, retaining its mooring off the Walkers' house, a testament to its enduring connection to its original owner, John Walker.
Originally built in Sydney in 1980, "Impeccable" was commissioned by Walker, a 60-year-old entrepreneur, at a time when he was seeking to compete in offshore racing under the IOR rule. Doug Peterson, a renowned yacht designer, was tasked with the design, and the result was a competitive yacht that would leave an indelible mark on the racing world.
Over the years, "Impeccable" became synonymous with success, particularly in the Sydney to Hobart Race, one of the toughest and most prestigious ocean races in the world. John Walker, an ice skating teacher turned engineer, who was a survivor of Nazi concentration camps during World War II and migrated to Australia in 1949, proved to be an exceptional skipper. His leadership, combined with the yacht's design, led to several victories, including wins in 1986 and 1993.
The restoration process was a collaborative effort, with Doug Brooker, the original builder, and John Denton, the mast builder and rigger from Whale Spar, offering their technical expertise. The project was mostly carried out near the Walker's home, with Ben Gray, who expressed his interest in buying and restoring "Impeccable", overseeing the work.
The restoration was necessary due to the discovery of rot in the transom and the mast step. The transom required a complete rebuild, while the mast step needed replacement. The 1990s replacement mast that John Denton built is in good condition, only requiring some new sleeving close to the deck level. The timber seating under the stanchions also needed replacement.
Despite the challenges, "Impeccable" has returned to the racing scene, ready to continue its legacy of competitive excellence and innovative yacht design under challenging conditions. The distinctive coloured stripes on its topsides, a familiar sight on the Sydney Harbour racing scene for decades, are once again a testament to its enduring spirit.
As "Impeccable" participates in offshore and club racing for the next phase of its life, it carries with it the memories of John Walker, a man who overcame incredible odds to become a successful yachtsman and an inspiration to many. His story, and the story of "Impeccable", are a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and the human spirit.
The restoration of "Impeccable" has opened new possibilities for combining its storied past with modern technology, potentially integrating advanced onboard systems to enhance its racing performance and lifestyle.
Moreover, with the yacht revived, the travel itinerary for its post-restoration journey around the world now includes exploring diverse cultures and scenic locations, making for an exciting fusion of sports, travel, and technology.
