Majority of vacationers visiting Greece hail from Germany
Greece, recognized for its captivating coastal landscapes, historic sites, and vibrant culture, remains a top choice for German holidaymakers. Last year, more than 36 million tourists visited Greece, with 5.7 million of those graced by the presence of German travelers – a sector that contributes significantly to the country's tourism industry.
As compared to 2023, the number of German tourists increased by almost 13 percent. With the trend forecasted to persist in the current year by the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), it is apparent that Greece will continue to draw in holidaymakers from Germany.
Tourists from the United Kingdom follow closely behind in second place, while Bulgaria holds the third spot with around 3 million visitors. A notable rise in popularity is observed in the northern Aegean Sea region, encompassing islands like Lesbos, Chios, and Samos, with a recorded increase of 40 percent in visitors to the area.
During their stays, tourists accounted for an estimated 230 million overnight stays and generated over 20 billion euros in revenue. On average, holidaymakers spent around six nights in Greece and approximately 523 euros each.
Regional cost discrepancies exist, with holidaymakers venturing to Crete setting aside an average of 770 euros in contrast to Epirus visitors who budgeted only 192 euros for their stay. The continued importance of tourism to the Greek economy, providing nearly 30 percent of the country's GDP directly, remains unchanged.
Greece's appeal stems from a combination of factors such as its rich historical heritage, picturesque landscapes, and favorable climate. The strong diplomatic ties between Germany and Greece coupled with a shared appreciation for history and culture are likely contributing factors to the increasing number of German tourists.
In light of the escalating number of German tourists, Greece's community and employment policies should consider accommodating the influx, particularly in popular tourist regions. Meanwhile, the tourism industry's revenue growth, amounting to over 20 billion euros in 2022, affects not only the employment sector but also the nation's finance and lifestyle, thereby impacting Greece's overall economy and GDP.
