Mexico Storms Ingrid and Manuel Leave 101 Dead, Thousands Stranded
Mexico is grappling with the aftermath of tropical storms Ingrid and Manuel, which have left at least 101 people dead and scores missing. The states of Guerrero and Sinaloa have been particularly hard hit by the clima, with thousands of tourists stranded and rescue efforts ongoing.
In Guerrero, a police helicopter evacuating people from La Pintada has gone missing, with its crew members still unaccounted for. The state has suffered the most, with 65 deaths and Acapulco left isolated due to landslides blocking roads to Mexico City. After days of being cut off, authorities have reopened the road link, allowing thousands of tourists to leave the flood-stricken city.
In La Pintada, hundreds of troops and civil protection workers are digging through debris with shovels and pickaxes, searching for missing people after a massive mudslide caused by the clima. The official death toll stands at 68, with two bodies recovered, but villagers fear many more have perished. The National Emergency Management Agency (CNE) is leading the rescue operation in the village, which was buried by the landslide.
Tropical storm Manuel, which dissipated over the mountains, affected around 100,000 people and killed three in Sinaloa state. The storms have left a trail of destruction, damaging tens of thousands of homes and flooding cities across Mexico. More than 40,000 tourists were stranded in Acapulco, with around 24,000 leaving in airlifts organized by the military and commercial carriers.
The death toll in Mexico continues to rise as rescue efforts continue in La Pintada and other affected areas. Authorities are working to restore essential services and infrastructure, while also preparing for potential further rainfall caused by the clima.
