Military Service Members Granted Complimentary TSA PreCheck Access

In the world of travel, time is of the essence. For those serving in the military, the hassle of long airport security lines can be an added stress. However, there are programs designed to make your journey smoother and more efficient: TSA PreCheck and Global Entry.

TSA PreCheck: Faster Airport Security Clearance

TSA PreCheck is a service offered by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) that allows for faster airport security clearance. To use TSA PreCheck as a service member, you will need your Department of Defense (DOD) ID card, which will act as a military Known Traveler Number. You can enter your DOD ID number into the "Known Traveler Number" section of your booking to use TSA PreCheck.

With TSA PreCheck, passengers can keep their shoes on, leave their laptops in their bags, and keep liquids in their luggage, making the security process quicker and less cumbersome. The line for TSA PreCheck is usually much shorter and proceeds more quickly than regular security. According to the TSA's website, 98% of TSA PreCheck passengers waited 5 minutes or less in line.

Global Entry: Speeding Through Customs

Global Entry is a program offered by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that allows travelers returning from abroad to speed through customs. If you're going to be traveling overseas anytime soon, it's well worth getting Global Entry, especially since it comes with the added benefit of TSA PreCheck.

To get Global Entry, you'll need to create a Trusted Traveler Program account via the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) website, complete the application, and go to an appointment for enrollment. Global Entry membership is good for 5 years, after which you'll need to renew.

Credit Cards and Free Memberships

Some credit cards offer a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit, which can be used to get these services for free. The Amex Platinum card, for example, offers a Global Entry credit, up to $120, and various other perks such as airport lounge access, up to $200 airline fee credit, and complimentary elite status.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve card also offers a TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, or NEXUS credit, as well as benefits such as $300 annual travel credit, Priority Pass Select membership, and trip cancellation/trip delay insurance.

For families traveling with children, TSA PreCheck can be beneficial, as children 17 and under who are flying on the same reservation as a TSA-approved adult may also use the TSA PreCheck line without completing additional paperwork.

Remember, Global Entry and TSA PreCheck are not automatically granted to service members and are not free. However, the Department of Defense (DOD) and TSA have joined forces to allow service members access to TSA PreCheck for free.

For those who don't qualify for TSA PreCheck by virtue of military status, they can still get free TSA PreCheck status by using a credit card that reimburses membership fees. For instance, the IHG Rewards Premier Credit Card offers a $120 Global Entry or NEXUS credit and various other perks such as Platinum Elite status and a free anniversary night certificate good for hotels up to 40,000 points.

Other Useful Apps

In addition to TSA PreCheck and Global Entry, there are other tools to help streamline your airport experience. The Mobile Passport Control app, offered by the CBP, allows travelers to fill out their personal information prior to passport control, bypassing the snaking lines of folks waiting for kiosks.

The app is a good option to use while waiting for Global Entry membership to be approved. If TSA PreCheck doesn't show up on your boarding pass, you should speak to the airline desk at the airport to get the issue rectified.

Don't forget to hit up the USO airport lounge when flying. It's a great place to relax and recharge before your flight. And for service members, it's a small but welcome perk during your travels.

In conclusion, TSA PreCheck and Global Entry can make a significant difference in your airport experience, saving you time and reducing stress. Whether you're a service member or a civilian, these programs are worth considering for your next trip.
