Nature, Technology, and Community Immersion: Mühlheim Students Engage in Enhanced Vacation Program

In the heart of the Offenbach district, the KiJaS program has been a beloved holiday and leisure destination for children and young people during school breaks. This summer, Mühlheim, a part of the Offenbach district, played host to a variety of activities organized by KiJaS.

KiJaS, short for KinderJugendSport or Kinder-Jugend-Sommerprogramm, is a program designed to support the leisure time of young people. It typically involves structured events aimed at promoting social interaction, physical activity, and creativity. These may include day camps, swimming sessions, arts and crafts, and outdoor adventures tailored to different age groups.

The summer holidays in Mühlheim saw the KiJaS program come to life with a series of engaging activities. The first day kicked off at the Offenbach weather park, where a meteorologist from the German Weather Service provided child-friendly information about weather phenomena. This was followed by a visit to the interactive museum Experiminta in Frankfurt for participants from the Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium (FEG) and the Friedrich-Ebert-Schule (FES).

Throughout the week, the participants engaged in a range of activities. At the Frankfurt Dialogue Museum, they were guided through a dark parcours by blind or visually impaired people, sensitizing them to life with visual impairment and demonstrating barrier-free living in everyday life. The youth center provided spaces for games, craft activities, and sports.

The children from the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule spent a day exploring the grounds of the weather park, climbing trees, and collecting flowers after their visit. Eleven children aged 8 to 11 participated in this summer holiday program.

The FEG and FES participants also visited Schloss Freudenberg, where they focused on a tour about hearing and listening. The highlight of the week for these participants was the Frankfurt Dialogue Museum, while the trip to Schloss Freudenberg was a memorable experience for the children from the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule, particularly the workshop about fire where they collected materials, started a fire, and prepared popcorn over the flames.

Despite a few hiccups, such as the planned trip to the climbing park being postponed due to bad weather, the week was filled with learning, fun, and community. New friendships were formed during lunch and ice cream at the youth center, and the third day ended with a visit to the Mühlheim youth center, which included music, dance, billiards, table tennis, and pizza.

The KiJaS program in Offenbach district continues to provide children and adolescents with engaging and supervised recreational opportunities during school holidays, fostering social interaction, physical activity, and creativity. For specific events or schedules for this year's summer in Mühlheim, interested parties are encouraged to visit the Offenbach district local government or youth welfare office websites for detailed timetables and descriptions.
