Outbreak of Listeriosis: 21 confirmed cases and two reported deaths traced back to cheese consumption.

In a recent development, over 5,400 pounds of cheese products have been urgently recalled by the Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op in Ohio. The affected cheese types include 100% Grass-Fed Pepper Jack Cheese, Horseradish Flavored Cheese, and Monterey Jack Cheese, produced between June 16 and July 16, 2025, and distributed mainly in Ohio from July 14 to August 7, 2025.

The recall comes after the discovery of Listeria monocytogenes contamination during product testing, due to environmental contamination during production. The Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op is the implicated dairy company.

Measures taken include the suspension of production during the investigation, immediate recall of the affected cheese products, public notification by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the company, and consumer advisory to return the recalled cheese for a full refund and avoid consumption. Contact information has been provided for consumer inquiries, with Nevin Byler, the General Manager, available at 440-632-5567.

This recall follows another recent Listeria-related cheese recall involving Fromi USA’s Brie Royal Faucon cheese in New York, where 12 cases were recalled after possible Listeria contamination. Similar consumer warnings were issued in that case as well.

As of now, no illnesses linked to these recalls have been reported. However, the recall aims to prevent serious health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations like young children, elderly, pregnant women, and immune-compromised individuals, as Listeria can cause severe infections, miscarriages, and stillbirths.

Residents of the commune of Moison-Feyne (Creuse) in France are also facing economic repercussions due to a separate cheese recall involving a family-owned SME in the region. Forty cheese products have been recalled due to potential Listeria contamination, but the factory in question is not mentioned as having any new recalls in the Ministry's press release. The toll-free number (0800 00 91 80) remains available for inquiries, as stated in earlier reports.

The list of the affected cheeses can be found on the government website Rappel Conso, along with the list of the suspect cheeses in the French recall. The press release from the Ministry of Agriculture and Public Health France confirms the recall of the forty cheese products in France. The cheeses in question are all pasteurized milk cheeses, as per the Ministry's press release.

The involvement of other sources, such as Foodwatch, in the investigation is noted in the Ministry's press release. The dairy is the main employer in the commune of Moison-Feyne and residents fear economic repercussions. However, the toll-free number (0800 00 91 80) remains available for inquiries, as stated in earlier reports.
