Over 33 million passengers have been transported by Russian airlines
The forecast for passenger traffic on Russian airlines in 2025 remains unchanged, according to the Ministry of Transport and Rosaviatsiya. Despite challenges such as drone attacks in airports and a reported decrease in traffic from Rosaviatsiya, the department's forecast, confirmed by Deputy Head Vladimir Poteshkin, remains at the same level as the traffic in the previous year.
Initially, Rosaviatsiya predicted a decrease to 109.7 million passengers for 2025, but the head of Rosaviatsiya, Dmitry Yadrov, reported that carriers could reach the 2024 level. This optimistic outlook is supported by the fact that Aeroflot, Russia's largest airline, transported 25.9 million passengers in 2025, an increase of almost 2% compared to the previous year.
The summer period, being a high-intensity flight and tourist season in Russia, has contributed to this positive trend. In the first half of 2025, 50.8 million passengers were transported in Russia, with a seat load factor of 88.6%. The high occupancy rates of "Smartavia", "Pobeda", and S7 airlines have also played a significant role, with occupancy rates of 96.1%, 94.6%, and 93.6% respectively.
However, the forecast remains unaffected by these figures. The loss of 22 aircraft in 2025 and the aircraft restored by maintenance centers in 2022-2023 have not influenced the forecast, nor has the increase in passenger traffic for Aeroflot compared to the previous year.
The Ministry of Transport and Rosaviatsiya have developed an action plan in response to drone attacks in Russian airports. This plan includes changes in the interaction between the military and civilian sectors and increasing interaction through alternative transport methods. However, these changes have not affected the forecast for the passenger traffic of Russian airlines in 2025.
One such change is the mechanism for sending aircraft to alternate airfields to reduce infrastructure load. This mechanism has been altered to better accommodate the increasing passenger traffic. As of the beginning of August, the forecast for the passenger traffic of Russian airlines in 2025 remains unchanged from the figure for the previous year.
