In the heart of Dubai lies La Mer Beach, a place that holds a special memory for one individual who first visited the beach on their third day in the city. With 29 years spent living in India, the UAE became a new home for this person, who moved there in October 2020.
La Mer Beach was the author's favourite spot in Dubai, a place where they felt the city could potentially become their permanent residence. Their first clear memory of Dubai was a visit to this very beach, where the lights lining the pavement and wrapping around trees held a special meaning.
On that first visit, the author sat with a fondue for several minutes, enjoying the vibes and feeling of the place, not just the names of the restaurants. They visited La Mer Beach multiple times after that, including once on a hot summer morning and another time to meet friends. However, since the beach's recent major transformation, the author hasn't returned.
La Mer South has undergone redevelopment, and new resorts have been built, transforming the beach's landscape. Although the beach remains open to the public, the commercial activity has decreased, giving the area a quiet, somewhat deserted atmosphere. Visitors report fewer rental options and less clear water compared to previous times, with a decline in the number of open amenities and services.
Despite these changes, water sports like jet skiing and paddleboarding, as well as family-friendly activities and events, continue at La Mer. The area features a new boardwalk, running and walking tracks, and changing facilities. However, the ongoing transformation seems to have had an impact on the beach's vibrancy, with some visitors suggesting a mixed status.
As the author looks back on their memories of La Mer Beach, they remember the warmth they felt under the lights during their first visit. Although the beach is undergoing changes, the author cherishes the happy times spent there, a testament to the enduring charm of La Mer Beach in Dubai.
