Spicing Up Your Hiking Adventures: Breaking Free from the Mundane Forest Paths

Unusually Engaging: Countering Hiking Disappointment - Parliament in Europe affirms resolution detailing its responsibilities within the Union.

Lace 'em up, step out, and breathe in the fresh air! That's the call for the Day of Hiking on May 14th. But it's not always as easy as that - the little ones might not be up for it, or the next breathtaking forest might be miles away. Fortunately, hiking doesn't have to be a bore. Here are some unconventional ways to take your hiking game to the next level.

City Limits Hiking in Essen

Leave behind the leafy greens and immerse yourself in the concrete jungle instead? Sure thing! As urban areas become more eco-conscious, city hiking is becoming a cherished pastime. In Essen, for instance, the Zollverein Trail winds through urban landscapes, passing mounds, industrial sites, and eventually leads you to the World Heritage Site Zollverein. No hiking boots are needed here; sneakers will do. Bonus: the routes are planned to cater to Instagram-worthy selfies of the old industrial charm.

The Ruhr region has other plans for city hiking as well. By 2027, they aim to create 15 more urban hiking routes across cities. As Christoph Lottritz of Ruhr Tourism GmbH puts it, "The Ruhr region with its edges and corners scores like no other destination."

Adventure Time with the Whole Crew

Hiking doesn't have to be a child-proof endurance test. If plannedCorrectly, it can be an enjoyable family bonding experience. As Benjamin Stapf, an adventure educator at the Naturfreundehaus Hardt, puts it, "The worst thing is when the parents want to hike 20 kilometers straight ahead - and the children are bored to death."

Avoid this by adding special experiences to the hike - let the kids choose the path, plan breaks for short explorations and imaginative storytelling, and promise a reward (like ice cream or picnic lunch) at the end.

Hiking with Furry Buddies

Nothing spices up a hike like having a furry companion by your side. Whether you’re stepping out with donkeys, llamas, or sheep, hiking with animals can transform a routine hike into a memorable experience.

"Many people are looking for relaxation and deceleration, just want to let their soul dangle," says Andrea Eikelmann, who offers llama hikes with Prachtlamas in Gelsenkirchen. "Llamas have something so gentle, friendly."

Every llama hike begins with a one-hour introduction session on the meadow. Then visitors can embark on hikes of varying lengths, enjoying the peace of being so close to these gentle creatures.

All-Senses Hiking: Forest Bathing

In Japanese folk medicine, Shinrin Yoku has been popular for years – and it's now you can find numerous offers in North Rhine-Westphalia. Forest bathing is not about covering distance - it's about perceiving the healing and relaxing effect of the forest with all your senses.

Forest bathing trails can be found across North Rhine-Westphalia. For example, Germany's first forest bathing trail is in Kalletal (Circle Lippe) in the Teutoburg Forest, with ten stations allowing visitors to consciously smell, touch, and hear the forest.

The Real Test: Extreme Hiking

How long should the hike be? 42 kilometers, 75, or even 100? Extreme hiking is all about pushing limits - but before you lace up your boots and dive in, remember it requires advanced preparation and a multi-month training plan.

Nevertheless, extreme hiking tours, orchestrated by professionals, are gaining popularity. Around 13,000 people participated in the Mammoth March Ruhrgebiet in April, and the Mammoth March NRW is planned for July, offering 75 and 100-kilometer routes.

For beginners, the Night Hikes of 30 and 42 kilometers scheduled for August 30th in the Duisburg Landscape Park North might be a more reasonable goal.
