Research emphasizes the Alicante region's impact on happiness levels
The Mediterranean coast of Spain, known as Costa Blanca, is home to the province of Alicante, a national leader in wellbeing and happiness. According to the Spain Happy Index 2025, the province ranks as one of the happiest regions in the country.
Alicante city, the capital, scored an impressive 89.99 points, while several of its municipalities also made the list of the happiest in Spain. Guardamar del Segura, El Campello, Torrevieja, and Benidorm, all in the province of Alicante, scored 87.55, 87.24, 87.19, and 86.87 respectively. Santa Pola, a town in the province, scored even higher with 90.62 points.
The province's success is attributed to its Mediterranean climate, quality of services, closeness to the sea, and a calmer lifestyle. Alfredo Millá, CEO of Sonneil, echoes this sentiment, stating that these factors place the province of Alicante in a privileged position.
Alicante enjoys approximately 299 days of sunshine per year and has only 24 rainy days annually. The mild average temperatures of around 20°C further contribute to its appealing climate.
The Valencian Community, of which Alicante is a part, is one of the five happiest regions in Spain. Other towns in the region, such as Elche, Sagunto, and Puçol, also scored high in the Spain Happy Index 2025. Elche, with its combination of cultural offerings, exceptional natural environments, excellent connectivity, average temperatures of 19°C, and low rainfall, is particularly noteworthy.
However, the provincial capital, Málaga, topped the overall list in the Spain Happy Index 2025, scoring 91.36 points. Ibiza, another popular tourist destination, scored 90.86 points, just slightly below Alicante.
Despite Alicante's high ranking, the capital of the province of Castellón achieved a lower score of 67.39 points in the Spain Happy Index 2025. This underscores the unique factors that contribute to the wellbeing and happiness in the province of Alicante, making it a desirable destination for those seeking a happy and fulfilling lifestyle.
