Restoring and Refurbishing Movement and Case of a Gilbert Admiral Wall Clock

Upon purchasing the clock, I was uncertain about its origin. The dial lacked any label or manufacturer's name, and the movement was unsigned. I pondered if it might be a Gilbert or possibly a Sessions. It didn't take me long to discover that the clock is a No. 3027 Gilbert, better known as the...

Restoring and Refurbishing Movement and Case of a Gilbert Admiral Wall Clock

The Gilbert Admiral clock, a time-only octagonal short drop model 3027, circa 1901, recently underwent a repair process to address a cracked small center pinion. This clock, also known as the schoolhouse clock with calendar, was purchased in a functioning state, albeit with a few cosmetic and mechanical issues.

The Repair Process

The repair process began with a thorough assessment and cleaning. The cracked pinion was carefully examined to determine if it could be repaired or needed replacement. The area around the pinion was cleaned using a soft brush and gentle cleaning products to remove any dirt or debris.

Given the nature of the crack, it was decided to use Permatex permanent thread-locker to fix the pinion in place without repairing the crack. This method allowed for a quick and effective solution, ensuring the clock could continue to function smoothly.

The Condition of the Clock's Components

Fortunately, the mainspring of the clock's movement was found to be in very good condition with plenty of life left. However, the third and fourth wheel, as well as the front and back plates, required bushings during the cleaning process.

The original Maltese hands of the clock are stripped of bluing, and the calendar hand is stripped of red paint. The clock also includes the original pendulum bob and what might be the winding key that came with the clock.

The Final Result

After the repair and cleaning, the oak grain of the case really pops, giving the clock a fresh and revitalized look. The clock, despite some issues, is a running Gilbert Admiral 8-day clock with calendar function. However, it cannot tell the time due to non-engaging gears.

The clock has a factory paper dial with the maker's name painted out on the bottom. It also features a very tarnished brass bezel, which adds to its antique charm. The clock's final result is a beautifully restored Gilbert Admiral, ready to grace any room with its timeless design.

Professional Assistance

For significant damage or complex repairs, it's always best to consult a professional clockmaker who specializes in antique or vintage clocks. This ensures the clock is repaired correctly and preserves its value for future generations.

During the repair process, the vintage clock, the Gilbert Admiral, was assessed and cleaned to ensure the cracked small center pinion could be fixed efficiently. The clock also needed bushings for the third, fourth wheel, and the front and back plates during the cleaning process.

The refurbished clock, although with minor mechanical issues, delivers a fresher and more revitalized appearance, particularly with the popping oak grain of the case. It shows a timeless design, boasting a factory paper dial and a tarnished brass bezel, perfect for home-and-garden decor.

With the mast’s name painted out on the bottom, this beautifully restored vintage clock would complement any room it graces, but it's important to note that it cannot currently function as a wall clock due to non-engaging gears.

Whenever dealing with significant damage or complex repairs, consulting a professional clockmaker who specializes in vintage clocks is vital to preserve the clock’s value and maintain its authenticity for generations to come, or for those interested in fashion-and-beauty, food-and-drink, lifestyle, travel, or shopping.
