Retrospective Biographical Writings for Elders in Leipzig-Leutzsch: Exploring Life Stories of the Senior Generation
In the heart of Leipzig-Leutzsch, 85-year-old Ines, whose name has been changed by the editor, has become a regular attendee at the 'Mittendrin' Senior and Neighborhood Centre. With a background in librarianship and a positive outlook on life, Ines has been an active participant in the 'Biographisches Schreiben für Senioren' (Biographical Writing for Seniors) project, funded by Leipzig's citizen budget since 2021. The writing course aims to provide a platform for seniors to share their life experiences, with workshop leader Carina emphasizing the importance of togetherness in developing new impulses and curiosity for oneself. Ines, who moved to Leipzig for her studies in 1957, was part of the first generation to attend school in the DDR's socialism and has actively experienced the political changes of the DDR and German reunification. She now appreciates the opportunities for older people in the city. The course began with warm-up impulses and exercises, gradually approaching creative and free writing. Over time, the participants developed trust, sharing mementos and stories, and even participating in shared reading sessions. Ines found the writing process particularly helpful in processing a severe personal loss in the past. Carina encourages more questions and listening to parents about past experiences, believing that comparison is essential for understanding oneself and that sharing memories can provide a new perspective for the future. Ines, on the other hand, does not plan to write her memoirs but wants to share her experiences, finding writing to lead to inner peace. She is open to participating in a continuation course of the writing project, which Carina suggests can help seniors find a voice, share their stories, and contribute to the city's rich cultural tapestry. The final workshop session on 'Biographical Writing for Seniors' took place at the 'Mittendrin' Senior and Neighborhood Centre. Ines, a regular attendee, explained that everything written in the course is biographical, believing that the project has provided her with a valuable outlet for self-expression and personal growth. Ines lives an active life in Leipzig-Leutzsch, appreciating the opportunities for older people. She previously led a meeting place for older people in the neighborhood and continues to engage with her community, inspiring others with her story and her positive attitude towards aging and community life.
