Russia's Tourism Push: Visa-Free Entry for Nine African Nations

Russia's influence in Africa is more perceived than real, with the country struggling to match the clout of Europe, America, and China. However, Russia is actively seeking to strengthen ties, with tourism emerging as a key focus.

At recent Russia-Africa summits, tourism has been a hot topic. Cultural exchanges and collaborative efforts have been frequently discussed. The Russian Foreign Ministry's Director for Africa Partnerships, Ivan Ivanov, underscores the unique role tourism plays in sustaining bilateral cooperation.

Currently, visa-free agreements between Russia and Africa are limited, applying only to holders of diplomatic passports and just six countries. Russia is aiming to expand this, targeting visa-free entry for short-term trips with nine African nations. So far, agreements have been reached with South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Egypt. Russia has also granted similar privileges to several Asian countries to boost tourism.

Russia's plans to implement a visa-free regime with all African countries are underway, with diplomatic talks ongoing. While critics argue that Russia's current visa policies contribute to its isolation, both Russia and Africa anticipate constructive positions on their mutual ties in the emerging multipolar world.
