Sudan, Ethiopia Face Escalating Conflicts and Humanitarian Crises
Conflict and humanitarian crises are escalating in Sudan and Ethiopia. In Sudan, over 32,000 people face catastrophic hunger in Nasir and Ulang counties. Meanwhile, recent violence in Ethiopia's Oromia and Benishangul-Gumuz regions has displaced over 11,000 individuals. The situation is further complicated by regional alliances and power struggles.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have gained control of the strategic border zone connecting Sudan, Libya, and Egypt, with support mainly from the United Arab Emirates and Russia. Their rivals, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), are backed by Egypt, Qatar, and Iran. This divide has influenced conflict dynamics in the region.
In Sudan, the RSF's actions have led to civilian deaths and displacement. Eight people died after the RSF shelled Abu Shouk camp for internally displaced persons, with 307 families fleeing the camp. The SAF accused the RSF of supporting Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army and the UAE, calling it a 'blatant assault on Sudan's sovereignty'.
The conflict has also exacerbated humanitarian crises. A damaged oil pipeline has been repaired, resuming oil exports, but 1,000 new cholera cases emerge daily due to a collapsed sanitation system and a large number of returnees. In Ethiopia, the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) has been granted access to its headquarters after being barred since 2020. However, a prominent journalist, Tesfalem Waldeyes, remains in custody despite being granted bail.
The situation in Sudan and Ethiopia remains dire, with ongoing conflicts, humanitarian crises, and power struggles. International intervention and diplomatic efforts are crucial to address these issues and prevent further loss of life and displacement.
